Insurance

Although I am not an in-network provider and do not participate in direct billing of insurance companies, you can file out-of-network benefits with me. You pay me directly and I provide a “superbill” receipt, which is a monthly statement summarizing the services received and payments made. Your insurer will then reimburse you the out-of-network rate.

Be sure to check if you have out-of-network coverage by asking your insurance provider these important questions:

  • Do I have mental health insurance benefits?
  • How many sessions per year does my insurance plan cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session for an out-of-network provider?
  • What is my deductible and has it been met?

If you can’t afford full fees and prefer not to file for out-of-network benefits, I can suggest affordable counseling programs. I’ll do my best to help you find the right therapist who meets your needs and your budget.

Important considerations when making the choice to use insurance or self-pay

Insurance companies require disclosure of highly personal information. A medical diagnosis is given and filed with the Medical Information Bureau when you file for mental health insurance benefits. This diagnosis remains on file as part of your permanent medical record. In some cases, a mental health diagnosis can affect future medical, health, or life insurance benefits. Fortunately, tax laws have created new programs that may help you pay for your therapy, even if you pay out of pocket. These include Medical Savings Accounts and pretax Flexible Spending Accounts. You can also deduct the cost of therapy from your taxes since it is a medical expense.
